About

The Project

Being in your early 20s can already be a challenging time: moving out, starting work or higher education, keeping up with family and friends, all while trying to figure out who you are. When cancer enters the picture, it doesn’t just turn the patient’s world upside down – it reshapes the lives of their loved ones too.

Some young adults may find it easier to recognize and communicate their feelings during these times, while others might withdraw and distance themselves from reality.

During my internship at Prime, I was tasked with creating a fictive creative campaign for Nära Cancer, a Swedish non-profit online support community for young adults who have a loved one sick with cancer or who have passed away because of it. The challenge of this brief was to create a campaign with organic reach and minimal promotion costs.

I created the campaign Mellan Raderna ('Between the Lines') with the aim of reminding withdrawn individuals that they aren't alone and helping them recognize and navigate their feelings, either alone in their safe space or with somebody.

The campaign revolves around a centerpiece: the zine. It's made from a single-sided printed A4 and folded to make a compact 7-spread booklet. It’s filled with illustrations and simple exercises that provide a space to explore and express feelings. I wanted the illustrations to feel raw, authentic, and unfiltered.

My idea is that the zine could be placed, for example, in waiting rooms at school offices, therapists' offices, oncology clinics, or even at the checkout in bookstores. The zine and merchandise can also be sent out by Nära Cancer on order.
